Wreckage thought to have come from SAMSON found near Sunderland

Shields Daily Gazette, Tuesday, 22/12/1868

Newcastle Courant, Friday, 21/10/1881

Michael Scott got in touch to say that his great, great grandfather was John Lee the principal owner of the SAMSON. On the day that she last set sail from the Tyne, John Lee was unable to command as normal and John Fiddler took over in his place. John Lee's brother, William Lee, was the engineman and John Lee's son John (jr), was the fireman. There was also a boy to complete the crew of 4.

It is assumed that the SAMSON foundered in a gale, somewhere between Sunderland and Seaham Harbour. All of the crew of 4 perished when she was lost. The SAMSON was not insured.

John Lee was described as a shipwright when he died at North Shields in 1908.
