| Miller, Ravenhill and Salkeld were shipbuilders and engineers on the Thames with a yard at Blackwall. They moved their yard to the Tyne at Low Walker in 1851, taking over the former Coutts yard. The yard was managed by John Vernon, an experienced shipbuilder, who later would have his own yard. The engines for these Tyne built ships were usually constructed at Blackwall and the completed hulls were towed to the Thames for installation of the engines. Miller retired in 1852 so the company was also known as Ravenhill & Salkeld. The Tyne yard failed financially at the end of 1854. The Thames engine works closed in 1872. |
